Bulletproof Coffee isn’t new. Chances are you’ve heard about it since Dave Asprey first introduced this concoction back in 2009 on his blog. Now that it has become a staple for most of Silicon Valley and has broken into the mass market (the first Bulletproof Coffee Shop recently opening up in Santa Monica, with more locations in the works) we thought we would revisit the subject of buttered-up coffee and give you the top 5 benefits of Bulletproof Coffee.
1. Healthy Fats
Although you may assume that mixing butter into your coffee is a relatively horrifying idea (haven’t we been taught to avoid butter?) the opposite is actually true. While you can’t use just any butter in your Bulletproof Coffee, the natural Grass-Fed butter that is recommended is incredibly high in omega-3 fatty acids, CLA, beta-carotene, Vitamins A, D, E and K and other antioxidants. The grass-fed variety also contains a substantial amount of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that is proven to prevent and decrease inflammation, which in turn can prevent mental illness, boost metabolism and improve your gut health.
If you’re sticking with Dave Asprey’s traditional mix, you won’t end with butter though. This recipe also includes MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) Oil from Coconuts. These are the alternative fuel source for your brain other than glucose, so it’s definitely beneficial to have them in the mix.
2. Mental Clarity
We all know caffeine gives your brain a boost in the morning, but Bulletproof coffee goes beyond that high-and-crash effect. Adding the healthy fats found in the Grass-Fed butter and MTC oil creates the perfect “slow-release” environment for the caffeine to keep you alert and clear-headed longer. Not only that, but your brain runs on fats, in fact, it’s mostly made of fats so giving it what it needs to thrive will keep it running better and for longer. Because your body can utilize MTC’s faster than other nutrients (like glucose) it gives you the quick boost you need while also giving you sustained mental energy to continue to be productive throughout the day.
3. Burns Fat
You may have wondered what the “CLA” was mentioned above in our talk about Grass-Fed butter. Well, it technically stands for Conjugated Linoleic Acid and it has been shown to have a great impact on reducing body fat mass, especially in overweight individuals. One study showed that participants given CLA vs. those given a placebo (Olive Oil) showed a significantly higher reduction in Body Fat Mass and there were no adverse affects on blood lipids (cholesterol). Adding CLA to your diet makes you a fat-burning machine all day long!
4. Gives You Energy
I’m sure you’re thinking “Duh, there’s caffeine in coffee, of course it gives you energy!”, and yes, we agree but there are other reasons you get an energy boost as well. Since your brain is made up of mostly fats and cholesterol, it works better and faster when you supply it with what it needs. When caffeine is mixed with the healthy fats from the butter and MTC, it helps your body produces ketones which are created when your body makes energy from fat as opposed to carbohydrates.
5. Replaces Breakfast
Seeing as butter is very high in calories, mixing only two tablespoons of it into your morning (mold-free) coffee, will give you enough calories and essential fats to keep you going well into the day. Each cup has about 450 calories in it, which is less than some people regularly eat in the morning, so not only are you getting a brain boost, you’re getting a portable, quick breakfast at the same time.
FUN FACT: Did you know putting butter in coffee has been a long-standing tradition in both Ethiopia and Tibet? Ethiopian’s mix spiced butter into their coffee and Tibetan’s mix Yak Butter into their tea, both see it as an essential source of energy in their daily lives.
Now to finish off, here’s a video of Dave Asprey’s now famous recipe to give you mental clarify, burn fat, feed your brain and give you energy throughout the day. Enjoy!
